2016 Geov8 Virtual Expo Welcome & Introduction

Time: 10am-10:05am

SESSION #1: The Uses and Challenges of Mixed Reality in Construction

Time: 10:05am-11:00am

  • Presenter: Ernest Yap, P.Eng, Co-Founder & President at Shapetrace
  • Summary: Mixed reality had been touted as the future of mobile capability in construction. The ability to blend a virtual environment such as a 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) design overlaid the real world opens up many possibilities. This ranges from on-site 3D visualization, tablet-based 3D scanning, real-time variance detection, to facilities operation and training, and location-based document control. However, there are significant challenges that must be overcome. Introducing a new type of user interface to an industry that is still transitioning from paper to digital will have adoption issues. Then, the ideal environments for mixed and augmented reality are static and bright: construction spaces are dark, dynamic, and dirty. Furthermore, such spaces can be dangerous. The uses and challenges of mixed reality in construction will be discussed using the lessons that Shapetrace has learned in the field.
  • Topic Tags: BIM, 3D Visualization, Construction

SESSION #2: 3D Elevation Program – Covering the Nation in 3D Elevation Data

Time: 11:00am-12:00pm

  • Presenter: Dr. Jason Stoker, Physical Scientist at US Geological Survey (USGS)
  • Summary: The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) is accelerating the rate and quality of 3D elevation data collection to address a wide range of critical needs. 3DEP is managed by the USGS and includes many partners who work together to build on existing programs with the goal to complete national coverage of 3D elevation data in 8 years. Broad support is needed to achieve national coverage; come learn how 3DEP tracks the nation’s progress toward nationwide coverage and learn how you can get involved in 3DEP.
  • Topic Tags: LiDAR, 3D Elevation Data

SESSION #3: Drones: Moving Beyond Stockpile Measurement

Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm

  • Presenter: Adam Rice, Director of Business Development at Kespry
  • Summary: One of the key use cases for drones in GIS applications is stockpile measurement. However, many companies have moved beyond that to using drones for mine planning, mine operations, reclamation and stockpile industries beyond aggregates, like forestry and fertilizer. Come learn the latest on how companies are using drones for GIS.
  • Topic Tags: Drones, GIS, Stockpile Measurement

SESSION #4: Mapping the Future of Agriculture With Drones

Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm

  • Presenter: Gagan Dhillon, Senior Director at DataMapper
  • Summary: A division of PrecisionHawk, DataMapper is a complete software solution for drones. Users seamlessly collect, review, process, manage and analyze aerial imagery using the DataMapper platform to turn drone pictures into valuable business data.  As the world population continues to rise, a new wave of precision agriculture technologies will be vitally important. Gagan Dhillon, director of DataMapper, will tell the story of how new drone technologies and sophisticated algorithm analysis fit into agriculture’s latest ecosystem.
  • Topic Tags: Drones, Photogrammetry, Agricultural Analysis

SESSION #5:  The State of the Art in Photogrammetry

Time: 2:00pm-3:00pm

  • Presenter: David Boardman, CEO of URC Ventures and Stockpile Reports
  • Summary: This presentation illustrates how reality indexing and photogrammetry is solving major business challenges on and off site. David Boardman’s discussion and demonstration covers current 3D computer generation, customer-use cases for profit and nonprofit, future applications, large-scale measurements, and how photogrammetry is currently contributing to inventory measurement solutions in the construction, mining and aggregates industry.
